Fifa launch match fixing investigations

|

FIFA Celtic newsFIFA have opened an investigation into one of the most amateurish betting scams of all time.

It hardly takes a super slooth to smell a rat when all seven goals in two international friendlies are scored from the penalty spot!

The friendlies under investigation were between Bolivia v Latvia and Estonia v Bulgaria on February 9.

Both matches were played at the Turkish resort of Antalya where Celtic’s u-19 squad spent a fortnight in January on a training programme.

In the first game of the day Latvia beat Bulgaria 2-1 with Bulgaria drawing 2-2 with Estonia shortly afterwards.

The scoring of seven penalties should have been enough to prompt suspicions but it appears that FIFA have reacted after being alerted to unusual betting patterns!

A FIFA statement explained: “Fifa has opened disciplinary proceedings against six match officials in relation to the international A friendly matches Bolivia v Latvia and Estonia v Bulgaria played in Antalya (Turkey) on 9 February 2011.

“The proceedings were opened following an evaluation of all documentation and information received by Fifa, in relation to a possible match-fixing situation in these matches. The Fifa Disciplinary Committee will be in charge to deal with the matter.”
