From Bilbao to Queens Park

|

Joe Chalmes Celtic newsAcademy graduates Joe Chalmers, Marcus Fraser and John Herron are in the Celtic squad to face Queens Park in the Glasgow Cup tonight.

The international trio earned praise for their performances against Athletico Bilbao on Saturday night but will be back in more familiar surroundings for tonight’s match at Lesser Hampden.

Celtic and Rangers have already qualified for the final from the round robin set up with tonight’s match giving more Academy kids the chance to shine.

“Queens Park always put out good teams,” coach Tommy McIntyre warned. “They are amateur in name only and have got a great set up over at Hampden.

“They treat their football very seriously at this level and have a team in the SFL and also in the Youth Initiative League.

“We’ve got a few players involved in the Victory Shield match with England but that gives us the chance to bring in some of our u-16’s who’ll be playing at this level next season.

“At any level it’s about giving players opportunities and we’re never afraid to put players in at a higher age group.

“Joe Chalmers, Marcus Fraser and John Herron showed the benefit of that on Saturday when they were called in to play in the first team.

“It took a unique set of circumstances to give them their chance but by all accounts they did very well.

“Their feet are on the ground and I’ve got no worries about their attitude after getting a taste of playing with the first team.”

Tonight’s match kicks off at 8pm and can be followed on twitter.
