New bhoy gets cap call-up

Adam Matthews Celtic newsBosman Bhoy Adam Matthews has been named in the Wales u-21 squad to face Andorra on Tuesday.

The 19-year-old has been frozen out of action since turning down a new contract from Cardiff with his move to Celtic announced last month.

With his current deal expiring at the end of this season Celtic are only required to pay a compensation fee to Cardiff for developing the player through the ranks.

Matthews has been playing regularly for the Cardiff reserve side but will relish the chance to step up and prove himself on the international stage even if Andorra are unlikely to be the toughest of opponents.

Matthews is the only Cardiff player in the Welsh u-21 squad which has produced Aaron Ramsey and Gareth Bale in recent times.

Ramsay and Bale are both in the full squad named today by Gary Speed for the sell-out clash with England at the Millenium Stadium a week on Saturday.

Celtic’s Joe Ledley is also in the squad with Speed desperate for a positive result after the disappointment of losing 3-0 to Ireland in his first match in charge.

Welsh hopes of a win will be pinned on their impressive midfield with Speed pleased to be close to full strength for the match.

“They are match winners,” the Welsh boss responded to the news of Bale and Ramsey’s return. “They can be the difference between a draw and a win or a draw and a defeat.

“They are big players and the more big players we have the better our chances although those players are nothing without the rest of the team.

“If we are going to achieve anything, then we need to do it as a team. We can’t do it as individuals and that goes for on and off the pitch as well.

“We need to be a team going in the same direction. International football by nature you are going to miss people now and again and we need to be able to cope with that when big players are missing.”

The double standards of the SFA.
