internet Celtic newsWebsites and message boards that promote hatred are set to be targeted by a police crackdown.

Among the policies announced by the Scottish Government yesterday was a range of measures to eliminate on-line abuse.

The growing influence of the internet is recognised by the football authorities and police who have become alarmed by recent developments principally aimed at Celtic manager Neil Lennon.

Any site responsible for carrying such material is likely to be targetted by the police with the full backing of the Scottish Government.

First Minister Alex Salmond said: “I’ve heard reports of quite disgraceful threats against the Celtic manager. Such behaviour will be dealt with by the police, and those responsible will be held to account.

“We want to make sure that there is no place for abusive and racist messages on the internet.”

This development will be welcomed by most internet users who welcome the greater freedom that the internet provides in comparison to traditional news channels.

With that freedom however comes responsibility with the law of the land covering the internet just as much as any other medium
