Incredible comment from Rangers chairman Alastair Johnston

Rangers chairman Alastair Johnston has made an amazing confession in the midst of takeover speculation surrounding the club.

Asked about a tax demand raised by HMRC Johnston admitted that: ‘there could be a judgement that the club can’t pay.’

That admission could have a devastating effect of Craig Whyte’s takeover plans.

The official Rangers website is carrying an interview with Johnston in which he claims that the takeover could be decided ‘one way or another in the next couple of days’.

With negotiations at a delicate stage between Whyte and Sir David Murray about the sale of a controlling block of shares Johnston revealed that the club may be unable to pay off a claim by HMRC.

The Ibrox chairman admitted: “It’s like a gorilla in the room and you don’t know what its appetite is.”

When asked if Rangers could go bust, he replied: “The reality is there is a possibility that there could be a judgement that the club can’t pay.”
