SPL delaying Inverness fixture announcement

|

SPL Celtic newsWith no word yet from the SPL about Celtic’s postponed match at Inverness Caley Thistle it looks like Neil Lennon’s side will be spared a four matches in eight days schedule.

The SPL have had since Monday to announce a new date for the match but with less than a week to go before the suggested date of April 14 it’s increasingly unlikely that Celtic will be asked to play St Johnstone and Inverness Caley Thistle within three days.

Giving the clubs and both sets of supporters less than a week to prepare for the match would be pushing patience to the limit with April 20 a more likely date meaning another postponement of the Kilmarnock-Celtic fixture.

With the Ayrshire side assured of a top six place rescheduling that match after the split wouldn’t have a major effect on the league with the Inverness game taking priority with Terry Butcher’s side still in with a chance of beating Motherwell to sixth place.

As ever the announcement of the post-split fixtures is likely to be greeted with complaints from clubs and supporters with Celtic facing a third match at Kilmarnock, Motherwell or Inverness Caley Thistle.

Neither of those clubs were in last season’s top six with the SPL computer using last season’s finishing positions to prepare the schedule for the new season.

Celtic are guarenteed to go to Ibrox and Tynescastle for the second time this season but are due one more away match.

With two trips to Kilmarnock, Motherwell and Inverness in the original schedule the SPL will have to give Celtic a third match away to one of those teams. After the split Celtic will have a home match with Dundee United plus one other.

Whichever club gets a third home match against Celtic will also be given a third away match with Rangers.

Yesterday the SPL announced that Celtic will play Rangers at Ibrox on Sunday April 24 but the full schedule of matches can’t be finalised until the sixth place team is known.

That could be confirmed on Saturday depending on the outcome of the Motherwell and Inverness matches.

Remaining SPL dates Round 34 – weekend of April 23/24, round 35 – weekend of April 30/May 1, round 36 – weekend of May 7/8, round 37 – midweek of May 11, round 38 – weekend of May 14/15
