Kris Commons doesn’t need much encouragement to sing the praises of Emilio Izaguirre.
Five months ago the Derby County midfielder hadn’t heard of the Honduran left back but after three months together at Celtic it’s hard to think of one without the other.
Izaguirre made a clean sweep of the player of the year honours with Commons the player that benefitted most from his rampaging team-mate.
Almost instantly the two players developed a rapport with Commons settling straight into the Celtic side thanks to the modest Honduran.
“Emilio has brought my game on so much and next season we can kick that on further,” Commons admitted after helping Celtic lift the Scottish Cup.
“In our positions communication is vital and although he hardly speaks a word of English our understanding has got better and better.
“He’s a real quality left back, he’s never rushed defensively and going forward it’s been a joy to play with him.”
Commons added: “When you play in The Championship you are used to full-backs that just launch the ball, they are solid defensively and join in the attack when they can.
“Emilio is different, he loves getting forward, loves to play the ball and when he’s called upon defensively he’s so strong and quick. He has a good positional sense and rightly won the player of the year awards.
“He’s been an inspiration from the moment that I met him, his energy levels and fitness are great and the way that he approaches the game is a credit.”
