Stuart Pearce names England u-21 squad

|

Gary Hooper Celtic newsGary Hooper has missed out on a place in the England u-21 squad for the European Championships in Denmark next month.

The Celtic striker was in the provisional 40 man squad but has been left out of the final squad with coach Stuart Pearce taking just four strikers to the competition.

Andy Carrol and Jack Wilshire have also been left out with the absence of the Arsenal midfielder provoking most controversy.

Pearce admitted: “Andy Carroll and Jack Wilshere will not be part of the Under-21 squad which travels to Denmark. Andy has been ruled out through injury.

“I spoke to Jack last week and he explained that while he told me in March that he wanted to be part of the squad, he now feels he is not in the best condition to take part in the Finals.

“That is based on the number of games he has played for Arsenal this season, sports science data which Jack was presented with last week and concerns he has for his fitness looking ahead to next season.

“Jack has always expressed his enjoyment at being involved with the Under-21 squad, and while I am disappointed not to have him with us for the Finals I’ve accepted the situation.”

Hooper scored 20 goals in 26 SPL matches most spectacularly with a double against Rangers on February 20.

A brutal challenge by Madjid Bougherra on Hooper’s achilles during Celtic’s Scottish Cup win over Rangers a fortnight later hampered the striker through the remainder of the season.
