Emilio Izaguirre has been ruled out of the Gold Cup which starts in the United States today.
The Celtic full-back has been struggling against a hamstring strain for the last month and has been ruled out after further tests yesterday.
Izaguirre will return home to Honduras to rest the injury before rejoining Celtic for pre-season training.
Honduras boss Fernando Suarez said: “Emilio had been complaining of muscle spasms in his leg in training and was sent to a clinic in Houston for tests.
“Those tests have revealed he has a hamstring tear and has been advised to rest for at least a month. It’s a shame for him because he loves playing for his country.”

Bad news for Honduras, good for us let’s him rest up till the close season begins.
It’s never good to see one of our own players injured, but the body can only go for so long without a break. The good news for us is he’ll be getting that break on Honduras’ time.
It’s rumoured today Newcastle are considering a bid for Emilio. The same Newcastle that ridiculed the standard of football in the SPL? Can’t possibly be.
On a personal level for Izzy it is hugely disapponting and bad news for Honduras and their chances of winning the Gold Cup will decrease because of Emilio’s talent will not be available to them.
However, I can’t help but say this is a good thing for Celtic. A player who will be near fully rested for next season as well as wanting to continue playing at his best in order to remain part of the Honduras squad (we all know the fickle nature of international football) and more importantly his talents will be not seen by some of the world’s better talent scouts and will be more likely to stay with us.
