Former Celt Davie Elliot will swap pounding the beat in Possilpark for Strathclyde Police for a fun run around Bellahouiston Park on Sunday to raise funds for Breathing Space.

Elliot will be accompanied on the run by four other former schoolmates from Holyrood and will complete the run in memory of Paul McGrillen who took his own life in July 2009.

McGrillen is best remembered for his role in Motherwell’s 1991 Scottish Cup win over Dundee United and enjoyed a long career in the game including a spell at Falkirk where he was part of the side that knocked Celtic out of the 1997 Scottish Cup at the semi-final stage.

Breathing Space is a government funded initiative that provides 24 hour support for anyone requiring help with Elliot and friends looking positively towards Sunday’s event.

“Paul liked to run and keep fit and the fact that we’re doing a 10k in his honour would delight him,” Elliot said. “Five of us will be completing in the run for Breathing Space on Sunday which is Fathers Day.

“Breathing Space is a helpline for people who have depression, we’ll be wearing their t-shirt’s. We were out together last week and we talked away about him, Paul was one of the boys and always will be.

“His career was similar to mine, from the school team at Holyrood he went to Celtic Boys Club and had a good career, he went to Motherwell and I played with him at Falkirk, he did all right for himself.

“There’s a lot of folk that don’t make it at Celtic and go on to make a career in the game. He was a good friend and will be having a laugh at us competing in the 10k, some of us are looking to finish before our work on Monday morning!

“I’m looking to do it in under 45 minutes, Stephen Nugent is looking at 50 minutes, Paul’s brother Alan is looking to be in the 40s as well and Martin McGuire is hoping to finish at some time on Sunday night.”
