Efrain Juarez helps Mexico into Gold Cup semi-final (video)

Mexico beat Guatamala 2-1 last night to book a semi-final place with Honduras in the Gold Cup.

Efrain Juarez completed his fourth game of the competition as the Mexican´s overcame the loss of an early goal to maintain their 100% record as they defend the trophy that they won in 2009.

There was over 78,000 in the New Meadowlands stadium in New Jersey but the majority of them were shocked in the fouth minute when Carlos Ruiz opened the scoring for the underdogs.

It took Mexico until the 48th minute to equalise when Aldo De Nigris scrambled the ball into the net with Manchester United´s Javier ´Chicharito´ Hernandez scoring with a cheeky flick in the 66th minute to win the match.

“This team knows it can win against any adversity if it wants to be a champion,” Mexican coach Jose Manuel de la Torre said. “We knew that it was a difficult match and we would have a difficult opponent.

“The early goal complicated things. We didn’t anticipate it. That gave the rival more strength and that picks at you little by little but the team didn’t panic and was able to resolve the issue.”

Juarez and his team-mates will now travel to Houston on Wednesday to face Honduras who are of course without the injured Emilio Izaguirre.

Honduras defeated Costa Rica on penalties after a 1-1 draw to reach the last four of the competition.
