Niall McGinn extends Celtic deal- then goes out on loan

Niall McGinn

Niall McGinn signed an extension to his Celtic contract- then quit the club for Brentford.

Celtic signed the winger from Derry City in January 2009 with that deal due to expire in June 2012.

With a year left on his hoops deal McGinn could have quit Celtic on a free transfer next summer but was happy to extend his deal and get the chance to go out on loan for a season.

The ambitious League One outfit snapped up the Irish internationalist taking advantage of the contact between the clubs forged by Bees coach Mark Warburton who is the driving force behind the Next Gen Series providing u-19 players with a Champions League set up.

Former Manchester City striker Uwe Rosler took over as Brentford boss during the summer and was delighted to add McGinn to his squad.

He said: “”This is a very good signing for us. It has come about because of the links Mark Warburton has with Celtic.

“It is fantastic news for the club that we can get a Northern Ireland international who is young but is proven at the top level.

“Niall is a quick, very direct player, and he has a very good work ethic. He will be another important addition to our squad

“I felt we were a little bit thin on the wings so we now have good numbers and competition for places. Niall is comfortable on both wings and it is important to have players like that.”
