Mick McCarthy was barely able to recognise Celtic Park after a 22 year absence!
The Wolves boss was delighted by his side’s 2-0 win over Celtic and the chance to push his players closer to the levels that will be required for the Premiership.
McCarthy was Celtic’s record signing when Davie Hay paid Manchester City £500,000 in May 1987 although within a week Billy McNeill had taken over as Celtic manager.
Under McNeill Celtic stormed to the double in the club’s centenary season with the passion pouring down from the terraces of the old stadium.
Only the main stand remains intact from those days with McCarthy taken aback by what he witnessed last night.
“It wasn’t like this when I played here!” he admitted. “The stadium was very different and I look at it and wonder if I ever played here.
“It was wide open and there was a low terrace opposite – the jungle – which was renowned for the noise that came from it and the ferocity with which they supported the club.
“Someone said to me downstairs that it’s changed a bit and I said so I have I!
“It was 22 years ago and I’ve got a lot older and the stadium has got younger. I’m not looking as good and this is looking better.
“It just shows what can be done but it’s a fabulous club.”

some great memories of those days especially the centenary year. the jungle was amazing (unless some guy about 6 feet 4 stood in front of you) the songs we sang then would get you arrested now.
