Celtic in Song: Bananarama and Bonnie Tyler to Depeche Mode
The list of songs which we sing with all our heart to encourage the team is endless and in recent seasons their have been notable additions mainly by The Green Brigade.
It made me think that some of the songs we sing are better known tunes than we maybe first thought of.
The following songs are certainly ones which spring to mind although maybe some of the younger readers will never have heard of the groups or artists who originally sang them.
In the mid 1970’s I remember the Celtic fans holding their scarves aloft and singing the song Sailing.
Rod Stewart recorded this song for his 1975 album, Atlantic Crossing, it was a number one hit in the UK in September for four weeks.
I don’t know if this song will ever resurrect itself again but it could be a good addition to You’ll Never Walk Alone with fans swaying side to side.
Na na – hey hey Glasgow Celtic was a song I first heard in the Jungle during the early 1980’s.
At the time the song Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye was a hit for the group Bananarama although originally the song was written and recorded by Paul Leka, Gary De Carlo and Dale Frashuer, attributed to a band they named “Steam“.
The Willie Maley song reverberates around the stadium today but did you know that the tune derived from Brian & Michael,a British music duo who charted at no.1 in 1978 with the song. Matchstalk Men and Matchstalk Cats and Dogs
Without further chart entries, they remain one-hit wonders in the UK.
We’ve won the league again- fly the flag,fly the flag. Oh to hear that tune once more, hopefully this season that will be the case.
In the early 1980’s British Airways had an advert with a particularly catchy tune with the lyrics ‘We’ll take more care of you fly the flag, fly the flag’, to urge patriotic Brits to use their national passenger carrier before any other foreign airlines.
More recently we have adopted the Depeche Mode classic ‘Just can’t get enough’.
This song was originally released in the UK in September 1981. It was recorded during the summer of that year, and was the band’s first single to be released in the United States, on February 18, 1982,the single reached number 8 on the UK Singles Chart.
In the heat of Lisbon
Again one of the newer songs to be heard at Celtic Park . The song emanates from It’s a Heartache, a song that was recorded separately by Bonnie Tyler and Juice Newton in 1977. Tyler’s version charted in the UK in November 1977.

Boney M released this song in April 1978 with this song which reached number 2 in the charts. On 21st May 1979 Celtic defeated Rangers 4-2 to win the most dramatic title finish of all time.
The fact that they were down to 10 men and 0-1 down at the time has only added to the legend and this song was sung at the end of the game that night in tribute to the team.
Maybe you have some favourites of your own and possibly know where they came from.
