David Marshall Cardiff newsDavid Marshall made a winning return to the Cradiff side as Malky Mackay’s side beat promotion favourites West Ham 1-0 at Upton Park.

Kenny Miller’s injury goal captured the headlines but Marshall was back to his best with a handful of saves to deny Sam Allerdyce’s side.

It’s my first game since January so it was difficult,” the ‘keeper told the Cardiff website. “I’ve had a few ninety minutes during pre-season and I felt good.

“Keeping a clean sheet gives us a lot of confidence going into next week. I think with the quality we have and if we can work as hard as we did there it will stand us in good stead.”

“We had a few chances earlier then Kenny’s winner just kills the game. We concentrated for the last two or three minutes and it was job done.

Ernie (Robert Earnshaw) and Kenny guarantee you goals and obviously a lot of work rate. Kenny’s game is all about workrate and in the last few years his goal-scoring record has been second to none.

“He just wears down centre-halves the whole game and when he gets his chance he’ll stick it away. We could have had a few more goals. We had a lot of half chances and I expect in a couple of weeks we’ll be even sharper.”

After missing out on promotion through the play-off’s last season hopes are high that Mackay’s new look side can finally take Cardiff into the Premiership.

Marshall added: “It’s a very good win as it’s a very difficult place to go to, we had a game plan and we set out our stall.

“They made us work the whole game but that is what we expected. It’s a great start to the season because it’s tough as well playing on a Sunday with everyone else playing on Friday and Saturday.”

On Sunday Cardiff are at home to Bristol City followed by a visit from newly promoted Brighton.
