After the opening weekend of the Premiership Gorbals bhoy Owen Coyle finds his Bolton side sitting at the top of the pile following his side’s 4-0 hammering of Queens Park Rangers.
For good measure Baillieston’s Malky Mackay has taken Cardiff City into top place in The Championship as he bids to join the seven Premiership bosses that were brought up in the Glasgow area.
Fresh from his appearance for the Celtic legends against Manchester United in midweek Coyle enjoyed his visit to London almost as much as pulling on the hoops and getting the chance to play alongside Henrik Larsson.
“I think it was a tremendous result,” he smiled. “We knew that we were going to have to withstand some early pressure, because Queens Park Rangers had run away with the Championship last year.
“I knew the atmosphere would be incredible and it was, we would have to defend with our lives early on, but gradually we grew into the game and scored a wonderful goal through Gary Cahill.
“That gave us the platform to go on and express ourselves, and I don’t think there is any doubt we are fully deserving of the three points and the goals we scored.
“Once we got the first goal, the confidence flows through the players and even more so after that and it was just a wonderful goal from Gary.
“I’ve said before, he has feet that belong to a centre-forward although he operates as a centre-back.
“He’s got unbelievable pace and great timing in the air, and he’s just a wonderful footballer, and as I say, it set us on our way to a tremendous victory.”
Following their 1-0 win at West Ham on the opening day of the season Cardiff were expected to see off Bristol City in Mackay’s first home match since taking over from Dave Jones during the summer.
New signings Robert Earnshaw and Rangers target Craig Conway were amongst the scorers in a comfortable 3-1 win.
Mackay said: “It was always going to be a tough game because it was my first competitive match at home, the fact it was a local derby and the fact Bristol had just come off a disappointing result last week and they wanted to change that.
“So we had to go out with a certain attitude today and I wanted the players to press at every opportunity. I thought they did that in the first half.
“I am pleased because the lads are taking on board what the coaching staff and myself are trying to apply.
“It’s hard work every day at the training ground and it was great to see that in the performance.”
