Swiss FA hit out at Sion in Uefa row

The President of the Swiss FA has hit out at Sion for embarassing Swiss football.

Peter Gilliéron, the head of Swiss football, was speaking at a Uefa Congress in Cyprus where Sion’s on-going battles with the footballing authorities are one of the main talking points.

Christian Constantin has threatened Michel Platini with a jail sentence and went on a one man war against both Uefa and Fifa since his club were thrown out of the Europa League for fielding ineligible players against Celtic.

Last week Constantin went to a Swiss court to get last week’s Europa League result between Atletico Madrid and Celtic declared null and void.

“Making use of civil courts and the verdicts of the courts causes astonishment,” Gilliéron revealed.

“This is unfortunately effecting our image. I hear many voices surprised that such things happen in Switzerland.”

Explaining the background to the Fifa transfer ban he added: “He (Constantin) has a contract with a player ( Egyptian goalkeeper Essam El Hadary) who was under three-year contract with another club.

“And he then ignored the ban on transfer imposed by FIFA the measures of UEFA are the right ones.

“Not only football, but sport as in FIFA or the International Olympic Committee sit in Switzerland, are in danger if their regulations of associations are called into question by appealing to civil courts.

“It is unacceptable that these regulations are ignored and the qualification of players is questioned.

UEFA can not tolerate the qualification of players is reached in such a way (through appeals to civil courts). This would lead European football into chaos. We must consider the consequences if similar activities occurred in the 52 other associations.

“I wonder if it is acceptable to endanger the reputation of Switzerland to the world of sports because the FC Sion made an unauthorized transfer and its president rebels instead of accept and fully comply with the sanction imposed.”
