Stevie Kean Celtic newsUnder pressure Blackburn boss Stevie Kean was relieved to see his side beat Newcastle United to reach the last eight of the Carling Cup.

The former Celtic reserve player has had to put up with a campaign from supporters desperate to remove him from the job with pre-match demonstrations expected at every home game.

Kean was given the job by the clubs’ Indian owners after Sam Allerdyce was sacked and has a big job on his hands with Blackburn sitting at the bottom of the Premiership.

The tide looked to be turning his way last night when his side went two up on Newcastle but two injury time goals took the tie into extra-time.

Morten Gamst Pedersen restored Blackburn’s lead but a Peter Lovenkrands penalty brought Newcastle level before a header from Gael Givet in the 120th minute of the match finally took Blackburn through

“We had worked so hard to get a clean sheet so when their first goal went in it was a horrible feeling,” Kean admitted. “It’s tough mentally when they scored so late to go and score again but we did it.

“We are always going to score goals but we have been working day in, day out defensively so that when we lose possession we get a good shape.”

There wasn’t much to smile about for Mick McCarthy as Wolves lost 5-2 at home to Manchester City.

All five goals from the visitors came in a 30 minute spell either side of half time with Wolves travelling to Manchester on Saturday to face the league leaders on Premiership business.
