Westminster backing for Rangers Brazilian plans

Rangers have been given government backing in their attempt to break into the booming Brazilian market.

Gordon Smith is currently in Brazil with a high profile delegation from the Scottish Council for Development land Industry led by Scottish Secretary Michael Moore looking to drum up links and support for Scottish business.

This is the latest move in Craig Whyte’s plan to turn Rangers into a global brand outwith the traditional markets.

Rangers recent 0-0 draw with St Johnstone was branded as Thanksgiving Day partly in honour of the contributions of Maurice Edu, Carlos Bocanegra and Alejandro Bedoya.

That game also co-incided with the launch of a Rangers twitter feed aimed to the Indian Hindi market- which has already attracted 65 followers after less than a fortnight.

Despite the problems with obtaining work permits for non-internationalists Rangers bid to make an impact in the Brazilian market is receiving the support of Scottish Secretary Michael Moore.

The minister said: “Like many football clubs, Rangers are looking to develop their global brand and enter into partnerships with Brazilian clubs, most notably Corinthians.

“They’ve also been attending the Soccerex Global Convention, the biggest soccer expo in the world and an opportunity for Rangers to show their wares.

“Rangers have a lot of interesting plans and it shows the world that Scotland can produce not just whisky and golf, but a lot of other cultural wares, such as Rangers.”

Indian strikers Sunil Chhetri and Jeje Lalpekhlua are currently on trial with Rangers.
