Terry Butcher referee newsInverness Caley Thistle manager Terry Butcher has launched another verbal attack on officials.

Approaching the anniversary of last season’s mysterious referee strike Butcher didn’t hold back as he launched into an attack on referee Stevie O’Reilly apparently oblivious to the fact that referees are all completely honest and that mistakes even themselves out over the course of the season.

Speaking to Radio Scotland after today’s defeat from Celtic Butcher said: “Referees had a strike last season, they weren’t happy well I’m bloody not happy with the way that things are going for my club.

“I feel like saying, yeah, ok SPL you go and sort the referees out and get a bit of consistency here.”

Threateningly Butcher added: “We’ve got the referees coming up here on Thursday, and I bet, I wonder who turns up because they are in for a rough time because our players feel very aggrieved that the referees are making decisions, not only in this game but in other games as well that have gone against us.

“Fifteen games played this season and not one penalty.”

Asked about the incident where Greg Tansey was red carded the Englishman said: “I have seen it several times and it was a deadly assault by a fingernail.

“Greg Tansey goes up to win the ball as you would do and Samaras did as well. The referee said to Tansey that he led with his elbow.

“His elbow is nowhere near Samaras’ face. His hand flicked against his face and Samaras went down holding his face.

“If you see it and when you do see it, you will say that it is never ever a red card. It is not a yellow card but it materially affected the outcome of the match.

“The referee is refusing to speak to us, so I don’t know why he gave it.”

Referring to the new style ‘fast track’ appeal system Butcher added: “The people are saying it is a fast-track system, well it is a fast-track to nowhere as far as I am concerned.

“There is no justice in the appeal, it is a kangaroo court as far as I’m concerned.

“I thought we had a great chance with the Chris Hogg appeal the last time. I went down to Glasgow to face the Compliance Officer who said it was a red card.

“The referee didn’t change his mind and said it was a red card. I was faced with three men on the SFA panel, so I was faced with odds of five to one against. Not great.

“Three times we have had men sent off here, three times we have lost and three times we were well in the game at the time.”

One decision goes Celtics way all season and it’s absolute mayhem in the media. They have been telling us it evens up over a season, well we are due 20 more decisons like that then.

bit harsh on Butcher who at least is consistent and has critisised refs plenty at ibrox previously .suppose like all managers he can be a bit of a bad loser but personally dont think he is the worst.

    • bhoylondon67 says:

Like you say, he is consistant, consistantly questioning referees integrity, Lennon was demonised by the SFA and the media for saying less on one occasion.

  • Joe says:

Interesting comments from a man who took a batant dive against us to gain a non-existant penalty in a cup final. Funny though, I never did see anyone with fingernails growing out of his elbows. Butcher himself led with elbows his whole career sonwho better qualified to comment I guess!

  • Stephen says:

When Tansey went up for the ball with Samaras he was looking at the player not the ball. The referee saw that, knew that the intent was there, and sent him off. Simple. Elbow, forearm – there’s no difference when you get it in the face.

    • Stevie says:

Celtic benefit from honest mistake shocker and Ragers don’t get ther customary penalty.
Just watch the Mankie Scottish media go to town on Celtic benefiting of bad decision.
No chance of the Refs going on strike that,ll only happen if timmy complains.

  • James 78 says:

It was never a sending off and the ref had a shocker yesterday. ICT could of had 1 or 2 bookings early on and the ref let it go.

I’m all for ref’s trying to let the game flow but sometimes a fouls merits a booking and the ref has to stamp some authority, which is probably what he was trying to do with the sending off.

In his defence Tansey does for some reason look at Samaras before he jumps and maybe from the refs point of view he thought he caught him with an elbow. Maybe just maybe Sammy milked it a bit but a finger in the eye can be worse than an elbow in the face FYI Terry.

El Kadourri was later booked for a similar foul in which ICT were let off for in the first half.

It seems commonsense and consistancy are not what scottish refs are renowned for and they seem to bring this backlash on themselves.

All said, couldn’t care less as long as we’re winning. Glad we got the vitory yesterday and the bunz slipped up. GIRFUY Butcher!!!

I remember Scott Brown being sent off for an altercation wi Kyle Laugherty when Dougie Dougie couldn’t see the incident and let’s not forget wee Wullie Collum who seen a penalty through the back of his head.
High time these refs went on strike where’s George Peat when you need him.

    • bhoylondon67 says:

Just think, if George Peat was around he could have put Butcher on a disciplinary charge, then sat in on the disciplinary hearing and been labelled “contrary to fair play”.

  • Mike Bhoyle says:

Tansey clearly looked at Sammi ..then jumped with his arm flying….if you look at the ref’s. position…he saw the intent ..he saw the arm….
    what’s he supposed to do?
Yes…technically, it was soft …but the ref. saw what he saw and called it.
And yes..Butcher does criticise refs. ..not just against us….but when will he be demonised for it..
    the way Lenny was??
Finally…nobody on BBC Sportsound yesterday, mentioned the Nakamura free-kick at Love Street…
So I sent them an e-mail to remind them.

    • bhoylondon67 says:

ICT have been getting away with hacking, kicking, tripping, pulling back and persistant unpunished fouling against us for a few seasons now, they should have finished every game against us for years with 9 men on the pitch.

  • Max says:

I heard that some Celtic supporters thought it wasn’t a red card, and I find that quite hard to believe.

Seen it a few times, in slo-mo replay and such and it shows a physical attack.

Tansey lauched himself at Sammi without any thought of getting the ball. He lead with his elbow, twisted round and basically grabbed the big chap by the face, then lifted his knee to meet Sammi somewhere in the gut/chest area.

It was a flagrant attack on Sammi, with intent to injure and no attempt whatsoever to play the ball.

After the assault(s) on Forrest and later big Paddy, Terry Bugner really has some brass neck!!

  • mick f says:

He is in the Scottish Hall of Fame maybe that lets him say what he wants.

It wasn’t a red but he can’t get away with that- not only the ref but the entire process got it.

He is correct about the crappy ref’s but as you said we’d never get away with that.

It was bril to hear that he was kicking stuff about…i also agree about the comments of the treatment of Forrest, it’s the same every game now in the first 20 mins he always gets 3 or 4 bad tackles & few cards are shown.

  • Greenjedi says:

People are saying it was a soft red card card, but a soft boiled egg is still a boiled egg!
