Robbie Thomson Celtic newsYouth team keeper Robbie Thomson can’t wait to face up to the best of Barca.

On Thursday night Celtic face the might of Barcelona in The Next Gen Series in the shadow of the legendary Nou Camp.

Unless Manchester City can pull off an unlikely home win over Marseilles the match against Barcelona is a must win for the Next Gen bhoys.

Thomson played in the back-to-back wins over Manchester City and on the back of a penalty save against St Johnstone on Saturday is brimming with confidence for Thursday night’s clash.

“If I get picked it will be a great opportunity,” the keeper said. “If we go in with the right attitude I think that we can get something, people underestimate how good our players are and this is the sort of test we’ll look forward to.

“If we get something we’ll give ourselves a chance in the tournament. It’s a top top competition and we all want to get something from this group.

“We’d love to progress to the next stage because we believe that we are good enough at this level.”

Whilst his outfield team mates have been catching the eye with their stylish performances this season Thomson hasn’t been left out of the limelight.

His penalty save last month in the 5-1 win at Kilmarnock was of arithmetic value only but Saturday’s spot kick success with Celtic leading St Johnstone 2-0 proved vital to securing a 2-1 victory.

Early last season Thomson saved a penalty away to Hearts before James Keatings popped up with the winning goal with the hoops keeper drawing inspiration from Joe Hart as well as tapping into the homework of the Celtic coaching staff.

“We have scouts at every game and if there’s a penalty I get a note of what happens,” Thomson explained. “It’s upto me where I go but to be fair Tommy McIntyre told me where to go against St Johnstone. It’s a credit to our scouts and staff who put in the work that contributed to that save.

“I never got any tips before the penalty save at Kilmarnock, that was all my own work! I always try and shout at the striker, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t, you can look like a fool or a hero. I watched Joe Hart do that, he’ll shout at the penalty taker and I’ve been fortunate that this season I’ve saved a few penalties.

“I’ve worked hard in training and matches to give the coaches a problem. I’ve gone into training and games with a clear head, I’ve stayed calm and consistent and the coaches have taken note.

“The only way that I’ll stay in the team is by being consistent, keeping my concentration and making the right decisions.”

On Sunday Celtic face league leaders Hearts at Barrowfield with a 1pm kick-off.
