First Minister Salmond tries to sell Hearts in Quatar
Scotland’s First Minister has never hidden his support for the troubled Edinburgh side and attempted to sell the club to Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani during a recent trip to Quatar.
Hearts have been put up for sale by Vladimir Romanov with the Lithuanian believed to be looking to recover his £50m investment in the club.
According to a report in today’s former Hearts director George Foulkes pleaded with Salmond to promote a sale to the royal family on Quatar.
“I raised the matter informally with the Emir and the prime minister of Qatar,” Salmond replied to Foulkes in a letter according to the Mail. “It was also discussed with officials from Qatar Holdings.
“Unfortunately, it was made clear Qatar has no interest in investing in a Scottish football club at this time.”
Foulkes was a Hearts director during Romanov’s takeover of the club and blamed the west coast media for creating a circus out of the sacking of George Burley who had taken the club to the top of the SPL.
Following the sacking of chief executive Phil Anderton Foulkes resigned as chairman in protest.
