Josh Thompson newsLoan defender Josh Thompson is 90 minutes away from a Wembley appearance after an action packed Chesterfield debut.

Twenty-four hours after joining the struggling League One side the defender found himself making his debut at home to Oldham in the Northern final of the Johnstone’s Paints Trophy.

Thompson managed to give away a penalty and get booked but at the final whistle he was celebrating a 2-1 first leg victory to take to Oldham’s Boundary Park on January 30.

With Chesterfield leading 1-0 early in the second half Thompson gave away a penalty for a foul on Shefki Kuqi but the same player sent his penalty against the crossbar.

Robbie Simpson scored a spectacular equaliser for Oldham in the 55th minute but midway through the second half Danny Whitaker scored with a penalty to give Chesterfield a win to take into the second leg.

In the Southern Area Final Swindon, including Simon Ferry and Paul Caddis, drew 1-1 at Barnet in the first leg.
