Peter Lawwell Celtic newsPeter Lawwell has revealed that Celtic have a stand alone policy to see them through the footballing recession.

The Celtic chief was speaking as the club released their latest audit accounts showing that bank debt has been cut down to £7m for the period ending 31 December 2011.

Celtic have been heavily criticised for failing to match the spending of Rangers in recent years but with the Ibrox side now living within their means and awaiting a potential tax bill in the region of £50m it appears that Celtic could be back in the ascendancy.

Fears for the future of Rangers have been openly aired recently with the follow-on debate over whether Scottish football and the SPL can survive without the troubled Govan club.

Having taken their medicine by losing three consecutive championships and missing out on the £15m boost of a Champions League campaign Lawwell believes that Celtic have a business model prepared for any eventuality.

“We have a stand-alone strategy,” the Celtic chief explained. “A stand-alone financial plan and a robustness hopefully that will take us through that.

“Times are pretty tough. I don’t think it’s appropriate for us to talk about any individual club, these things are hypothetical at the moment. We look after ourselves.”

Lawwell added: “We don’t rely on any other club. We are in a decent position, we’re very strong.

“Our aspirations and horizons are to dominate in Scotland but also beyond that we want to compete at the highest level again in Europe.

“I think we’ve a view, a very strong view on certain circumstances but we’ll only share that at the right time.
