Police threat to Rangers v Celtic match

Strathclyde Police have warned Rangers that they will call off the March 25 clash with Celtic if they don’t pay up outstanding bills.

Rangers owe the force over £50,000 prior to going into administration as well as £17,000 from last Saturday’s match against Kilmarnock.

That match went ahead after administrators Duff & Phelps assured the police that they would be paid but so far no cheque has arrived.

Rangers are due to face Hearts next Saturday but unless the police are paid in advance they will pull the plug on fixtures denying the club their main means of raising cash

“We won’t police another match at Ibrox until we have had payment for the one that has just been,” warned Strathclyde Chief Constable Stephen House

“Legally they can’t go ahead and have the match, with us agreeing to police it, if they don’t know they can pay us.”

Rangers owed Strathclyde Polices £51,882 at the time they went into administration with that figure unlikely to be settled.

While a normal SPL match costs around £17,000 a derby match costs the host club closer to £50,000 to police.

Rangers have already been deducted 10 points by the SPL for going into administration but it’s unclear if there are any punishments or sanctions that can be applied for being unable to host a match due to lack of police cover.

Hearts, Dunfermline, Dundee United and Inverness Caley Thistle are all owed money by Rangers, before the December 28 clash at Celtic Park Celtic insisted on being paid in advance before issuing Rangers with tickets.
