Rangers axe Gordon Smith

Gordon Smith and Ali Russell have become the first casualties of Rangers going into administration with both executives being made redundant tonight.

Smith and Russell were amongst Craig Whyte’s first appointments after taking over at Ibrox and the axing of former Chief Executive Martin Bain.

The role of both men was never made clear although both had recently been deployed on globe trotting missions to promote the Rangers brand in Brazil and India.

Rangers went into administration on February 14 with further redundancies expected as administrators Duff & Phelps attempt to cut costs and avoid liquidation.

In a statement issued through the Rangers website Smith said: “I would make the point that I was very frustrated in my job and unable to fulfil the job specification which was originally outlined to me.

“This was to control the major aspects of the football department outwith the first team operations.”

The loss of Smith leaves Ally McCoist even more isolated with Dave King the only executive remaining from David Murray’s time at the club.

Smith was previously CE of the SFA and is expected to resume his media career.
