St Johnstone chief slams Sandaza approach

St Johnstone chief Steve Brown has slammed Rangers attempts to sign Francisco Sandaza following the sale of Nikica Jelavic to Everton.

The Spanish striker rejected a pre-contract offer from Rangers earlier in January but was reportedly subject to renewed interest as the transfer window closed on Tuesday.

Mervan Celik was the only player to join Rangers during the transfer window with Brown sceptical about interest in Sandaza.

“Rangers didn’t make an offer,” the St Johnstone chairman told the Sun. “They made inquiries, but it didn’t move from their position of a few weeks ago.

“They knew our figure was £300,000 and they were quite a bit away from that. There was no indication Rangers were willing to pay money for Fran. Rangers knew our expectations and didn’t even come close.

“We thought we might miss out on the top six without Fran, so the financial fall-out would have been quite big.

“We didn’t think we would lose Fran to Rangers, but we thought a Championship club might come in for him.

“It was made clear all along we wanted to keep Fran. He’s our top scorer and speculation is part and parcel of the transfer window, but now we can move on.”
