Josh Thompson newsJosh Thomson was a Wembley winner yesterday as Chesterfield beat Swindon 2-0 to lift the Johnstone Paints Trophy.

The defender has been a regular for the League One side after failing to make a single appearance on loan to Peterborough during the first half of the season.

Chesterfield could end up being relegated, and swapping places with Swindon, but after looking dead and buried at new year are only seven points away from safety with eight games left to play.

After getting one over on Paolo di Canio’s side Chesterfield boss John Sheridan said: “I will enjoy it but I will not get carried away. It is a day for the supporters. It is a trophy and it is a great achievement.

“But in my mind, I’m desperate to stay in the division. I think we are good enough. It is going to be difficult but we have to believe that we can do it.”

Former Celt Simon Ferry was in the defeated Swindon side.

In the Championship Darren O’Dea helped Leeds bounce back from their 7-3 thrashing by Nottingham Forest with a 1-0 win away to Millwall to keep Neil Warnock’s side in with a chance of reaching the play-offs.

Ipswich’s up and down form continued with a 2-1 defeat away to Watford with Daryl Murphy failing to get on the scoresheet.

In Scotland Greig Spence scored his fifth goal of the season as Hamilton beat Queen of the South 3-0 at home.

Lewis Toshney returned to the Kilmarnock side that beat Motherwell 2-0 but James Keatings and Richie Towell were unable to get off the bench as St Johnstone beat Hearts and Hibs lost at home to Dundee United.
