A first half strike from Shaun Maloney earned Wigan a historic 1-0 win over Manchester United and re-opened the Premiership title race.
The former Celt scored his second goal for Wigan five minutes into the second half with the title favourites unable to respond.
With Manchester City demolishing West Brom 4-0 at the Etihad Stadium the gap at the top of the table has been cut back to five points with a derby match at the Etihad before the end of April.
Wigan had never taken a single point from their near neighbours but with a side that included five former SPL players Roberto Martinez’s side came up with one of the biggest coupon-busters of the season.
The result lifts Wigan out of the drop zone onto 31 points, two clear of third bottom Bolton who have a game in hand against Aston Villa.
With QPR beating Swansea 3-0 at home Bolton and Blackburn find themselves adrift at the bottom of the table with Wolves looking doomed after losing 3-0 at home to Arsenal.
