David Marshall Cardiff newsFormer Celtic keeper David Marshall has signed a three year contract extension with Cardiff City.

The Welsh side lost out to West Ham United in the semi-final of the Championship play-offs but manager Malky Mackay has moved quickly to secure the services of his first choice keeper.

Marshall has made over 100 appearances in three seasons at Cardiff and missed out on the Carling Cup Final run where Tom Heaton was preferred.

“It’s great committing to the club for the next three years at least. It was an easy decision for me to extend my deal here,” Marshall told the Cardiff website.

“I was more than happy to sign it and the process has been quite straight forward from start to finish.

“I had a year left on my current deal which would have taken me through next season but the gaffer (Mackay) told me not so long ago and told me he wanted to offer me a new deal.

“He gave me the chance to get back fit and prove myself last summer and I appreciated that I want to be able to repay him now on the pitch and kick on again.”

Marshall exploded onto the scene with a never-to-be-forgotten clean sheet in the Nou Camp in 2004 as Celtic dumped Barcelona out of the UEFA Cup.

Just over two years later he left Celtic for Norwich after Artur Boruc became established as Gordon Strachan’s first choice keeper.

Lee Naylor was amongst the players released by Cardiff with former Motherwell captain Paul Quinn also freed.
