Adam Matthews Celtic newsAdam Matthews season ended in disappointment last night as Mexico beat Wales 2-0 in New York.

The Celtic defender was injured after an hour but will have benefited from the experience of playing against a top class side in testing humid conditions.

Mexico opened the scoring in the 43rd minute but didn’t score their second until the final minute with new Welsh boss Chris Coleman pleased with the way that his side played without the influence of Joe Ledley and Gareth Bale in the middle of the park.

“It was a tough game for us,” the Welsh boss admitted. “Mexico are a super team, they play with imagination and move the ball well.

“They have quality in most areas. We suffered with the weather, it was hot for us but we expected that.

“Teams don’t come much better than Mexico but we gave everything we had. We got into good positions where maybe we could have done better but that was down to fatigue and taking the wrong option.

“We conceded the goals two minutes before the end of the first half and two minutes before the end of the game, so fatigue definitely played a part there.

“The disappointing thing was we conceded the goals from crosses, an area we would not expect to concede from. We had worked very hard at nullifying Mexico’s movement but we have been caught out twice from crosses.”

Wales open their World Cup qualifying campaign at home to Belgium on September 7 before travelling to Serbia four days later. On October 12 they host Scotland.
