Regan faces tough decision in his longest day

Stewart Regan faces his toughest day in the SFA hotseat today as the Rangers crisis threatens to go global.

Yesterday’s decision at the Court of Session in Edinburgh to refer the decision to impose a 12 month transfer embargo on Rangers has put the SFA firmly in the spotlight.

Having did his best to avoid dealing with the on-going crisis at Ibrox for almost a year Regan now faces the real prospect of sanctions being applied to the Scottish international side as well as clubs looking forward to competing in UEFA competitions next season.

Failure to act firmly today could have a devastating impact on the Scottish game.

After pulling up short of suspending or expelling Rangers the SFA’s generosity has been returned with interest by the Ibrox club.

Sticking to their own punishments Regan must ensure that a suspension, expulsion or ban from next season’s Scottish Cup is imposed on Rangers.

And also consider a punishment for taking football into the civil courts- an action that FIFA clamp down on strongly.

Under Regan’s reign Rangers ignored requests for paperwork over the eligibility of Craig Whyte to be a club director.

The Ibrox side have failed to produce audited accounts since 2010. Transfer fees are due to clubs in Austria, Sweden, Italy, France, England and Scotland.

Any club outwith the SPL would have been hammered for a similar catalogue of offences.

If a clear punishment is not handed out by the SFA today Regan can forget about plans for a trip to Brazil in 2014 with sponsors shipping out of the Scottish game left right and centre over the game’s governing bodies failure to govern and to apply the laws of the game without fear or favour.
