Paul Hartley Alloa NewsFormer Celt Paul Hartley is in the running to become the next manager of Hearts.

Last week the Jambos parted company with Paolo Sergio with the message going out that a cheaper replacement is required.

Sergio refused to accept a substantial pay cut and left the club with his two assistants to return to Portgual.

Hartley guided Alloa to the Third Division title in his first season in management with former team-mate Craig Gordon believing that the former Scotland midfielder could take the step up into the SPL.

Gordon joined Hartley and Steven Pressley to voice their concerns at the way Vladimir Romanov was running Hearts but the out of contract keeper doesn’t believe that incident rules Hartley out of a return to Tynecastle.

“I don’t think the fact Paul and Steven Pressley spoke out would stop Vladimir Romanov going for them now,” Gordon claimed. “That’s in the past and I don’t think it ended too badly for myself and Paul.

“Hearts got good money for us and we parted on reasonable terms so there would be no problem in either of them going back. Hopefully, whoever takes over would get the time to build a new, young squad.

“I don’t think going from the Third Division to the Premier is too big a jump. Craig Levein did something similar when he went from Cowdenbeath to the Hearts job, so it’s possible.

“The success Paul has had at that level will have built his confidence. It was always going to be difficult going from playing to management — but he now knows he can do it.

“Paul seems to have settled into it very quickly and given the chance, he could probably do it at a higher level as well.”
