Craig Bellamy Olympic newsCraig Bellamy has revealed that he has been selected for Team GB.

The former hoops striker has won 69 caps for Wales but never played in a major championship.

Coach Stuart Pearce is expected to name his 18 man squad later this week with the players apparently agreeing to a vow of silence until the squad is announced.

However speaking at an event in Singapore Bellamy revealed: “I am in the Olympic squad but I was supposed to keep it quiet.

“It’s a different challenge. I had a difficult season with Liverpool but the Olympics is a one-off.”

Pearce is allowed to name three over-age players in his squad with Ryan Giggs and David Beckham in contention for the other places.

Celtic’s James Forrest and Adam Matthews had been mentioned for the squad but will be involved in Celtic’s Champions League qualifiers at the same time.

Team GB have been drawn to face Uruguay, UAE and Senegal, the games will be played at Old Trafford, Wembley and Cardiff’s Millennium Stadium.

Hampden Park will host three matches, the double header of Honduras v Morocco and Spain v Japan on July 26 plus Egypt v Belarus on August 1.

Celtic pair Emilio Izaguirre and Ki Sung Yeung are both in contention to play in the tournament despite playing in the 2010 World Cup.

Honduras and South Korea have both qualified for the finals and are keen to play their strongest possible teams.

With Celtic playing Champions League qualifiers on July 31/August 1 and August 7/8 either side of the opening SPL match the club is reluctant to allow their players to take part.
