Whittaker: No loyalty to the new club

Steven Whittaker has cast doubts over Charlie Green’s newco Sevco as the Yorkshire businessman braces himself for more players refusing to transfer their contracts.

Alongside Steven Naismith the former Hibs defender was on the verge of tears as he explained his reasons for moving on.

Green has threatened legal action against any club that signs up any former Rangers players and has called in the SFA to block any transfers.

The SFA are obliged to issue an International Transfer Certificate for any moves outwith Scotland with both Whittaker and Naismith expected to move to England.

Since Rangers moved into liquidation there has been confusion over the relationship between the old club and the newco but Whittaker sees things being clear cut.

“I think that it’s important that we express the loyalty that was shown to the club,” he explained. “Through the hard times of administration, the 75% wage cuts that we took, we didn’t need to do that.

“We gave the club the opportunity to try and get through the CVA and continue but obviously that outcome didn’t turn out the way we wanted it to.

“The new company has only started, there’s no history there for us so we owe no loyalty to the new club.”

He added: “From a football point of view I feel that it’s best to continue my career elsewhere. Going by the punishment coming to the club it doesn’t look like they’ll be playing in the SPL or any European football.

“I’m 28 and want to play at the top level as much as I can and it doesn’t look like that I’m going to get that opportunity here.”
