Niall McGinn can’t wake to make his Aberdeen debut at Celtic Park.

The Irishman jumped at the chance to move to Pittodrie after falling out the picture at Celtic and a season long loan at Brentford.

Saturday’s fixture list has thrown up a return trip to the east end of Glasgow with McGinn out to impress his new supporters rather than his former club.

“I enjoyed my time at Celtic but I’m a professional and I’m not going to be trying to prove anything to anyone,” he explained. “I want to do well in an Aberdeen shirt.

“It couldn’t have worked out much better than getting Celtic away in my first game. It will be nice to go to Parkhead and see all the boys again but my main concern is Aberdeen as I play for them now.”

“When new signings come in the fans always get excited but we will just get on with things.

“So far we have only focused on getting our fitness right and getting a good pre-season under our belts. Once the season starts we’ll hopefully be able to show what we can do. There’s no reason why we can’t challenge for a European place.

“We’ve got a good squad of players and we showed against Bremen and St Pauli we can compete at the highest level. If we can get some consistency, who knows? Maybe we will be able to push right up the table.

“It’s nice to come to a new club and work with different players. I’ve played against Jonny (Hayes) a few times and I know how good a player he is.

“I’ve settled in well. There is a nice mixture of youth and experience. Training has been good and pre-season has been good – and the boys can’t wait for the season to start now.

“We are improving as a team with every game. Celtic will have a lot of possession so Werder Bremen was a good game to prepare and it can only stand us in good stead.”
