Captain Ledley pleased with performance against Real

Joe Ledley feels that Celtics performance against Real Madrid confirms that the team is heading in the right direction.

The Welshman has been at the heart of Neil Lennon’s plans over the last five games stating his case to be the first pick central midfielder despite the claims of Victor Wanyama, Beram Kayal and Scott Brown.

Ledley put in 90 minute performances against HJK Helsinki and Real in less than three days and is looking forward to the challenges ahead.

“I feel it’s coming together for us a bit,” he said before flying back to meet up for Welsh international duty against Bosnia at Llanelli on Wednesday. “We worked on our fitness more than ball-work and that has been proved when we lasted long into the game.

Obviously we lost and that’s not what we want. But with a lot of key players out, Brownie, Sammy, James I don’t think we can be too upset.

“It was a great game for us and I thought we did pretty well. We knew we’d be under pressure against a world class team and I thought we dealt with it well.

“They beat AC Milan 5-1 a couple of days ago, so I felt we put in a decent shift and we were comfortable on the ball especially in the first-half. Then the weather took its toll and it became tougher. But overall I think we can be happy.

“Ronaldo is one of the best players in the world and it was great to be on the same pitch as him. It was a first for me and probably most of the lads, so it’s a great moment to be given the chance to show him how we can play.”

Ledley, captain for the match, added: “It’s a fantastic moment in my career to lead Celtic out against Real Madrid, something I’ll remember for the rest of my life. It’s an amazing achievement for me.”
