Hampden dream over for brave Sevco

Queen of the South ended the Ramsden Cup dream of brave Sevco after a dramatic penalty shoot-out at Ibrox.

The Third Division play-off chasers matched their opponents for two hours but had to endure agony during a penalty shoot-out with Dean Shiels and Anestis Argyriou missing from the penalty spot allowing Ryan McGuffie to net the winning penalty.

There was little hint of the drama that was to follow after a goal-less first half but after the break the game exploded into life with Queens taking the lead through Nicky Clark, son of former Rangers striker Sandy ,

Sevco hit back with goals from Barcelona target Barrie Mackay and a Lee McCulloch penalty but deep in jury time Gavin Reilly equalised for the visitors.

There were no goals in extra-time forcing the tie into penalties with a place in the last four of the competition up for grabs.

Sadly for Ally McCoist his cup jinx continued as he watched helplessly as his side were knocked out on penalties.

The rooky Ibrox boss has now been in charge of five cup exits in 13 months since taking over from Walter Smith who watched the drama unfold from the Ibrox Directors Box.

Before the match Charles Green had continued his war of words with the SFA despite being hit with a double charge of bringing the game into disrepute.

In a statement on the club website Green said: “The words that seem to have upset the SFA so much are that ‘the SPL appoint the jury, set the outcome and set the punishment before the trial’ – those things are true and I stand by them.

“Whether or not the commission works to that agenda remains to be seen, but let’s be clear there was a predetermined outcome.

“If their chief Executive and lawyers were drafting agreements that contained definitions of titles that would be stripped in late June/early July long before a commission was even thought about, how can anyone say they are not pursuing an agenda and a predetermined outcome?

“I would ask the SFA and the SPL to release the first draft of the five-way agreement put together by their lawyers to reveal all of the sanctions. Stripping of titles was definitely within that document.”
