Doncaster seeks reconstruction consensus

Neil Doncaster has admitted that the SPL is split over league reconstruction.

During the summer reconstruction suddenly became fashionable among the authorities as they attempted to ensure that Sevco can reach the top flight as quickly as possible.

Alongside Stewart Regan of the SFA Doncaster lobbied strongly for Sevco to be placed in the First Division with an expanded SPL including play-offs offered to sweeten the deal.

SFL clubs rejected those moves leaving Sevco at least three seasons away from the top flight under the current set up.

At an SPL meeting yesterday reconstruction was again up for debate but there is little consensus amongst the clubs for an expanded top flight or for altering the current set up to accelerate Sevco through the divisions.

“There is a real desire for change within the game,” Doncaster claimed. “There is a public appetite for change, and that is matched by clubs as well so hopefully we can work together to come up with a set of proposals on which we will get a consensus.

“Different clubs have different views about what the ideal format is. I think it’s important on any change that you form a consensus.

“So we’ll be working with all parties within Scottish football, our clubs and obviously the SFA and SFL, to see if we can agree exactly what that consensus should be.”

Despite Doncaster’s claims of Armageddon and the meltdown of commercial income no SPL club appears on the brink of administration although pay-days at Tynecastle are a continuing problem.

“Crowds have held up very well, commercial income is holding up pretty well in terms of central revenues,” the SPL chief added.

“We are delighted that the focus is once again on the football, which is where it should be.”
