Next Gen Celtic NewsCeltic’s youth side tumbled out of the Next Gen Series after losing 1-0 away to PSV Eindhoven.

A win for either side would almost certainly guarantee qualification for the next stage with an early goal for Aston Villa away to Sporting Lisbon further complicating the arithmetic.

Celtic matched the Dutch outfit for most of the game but in the 83rd minute defender Joshua Brenet headed home a corner from the right with no-one defender on the back post.

The defeat means that Celtic ended the competition with four points collected from a home win over PSV and a draw against Aston Villa with PSV picking up nine points from three home wins.

Robbie Thomson made a surprise return to the side after completing his loan spell taking over the gloves from Glen Daniels.

Sunday’s matchwinner at Hibs, Denny Johnstone, was also in the starting line-up playing ahead of Bahrudin Atajic in attack with Jamie Lindsay dropping out of the midfield.

PSV had opened the game strongly but after early set-backs in their previous two away ties the Celtic defence held firm and gradually played their way into the match in front of a noisy crowd in the Philips Stadium.

The home side enjoyed an edge in possession in the early stages of the second half without really threatening the Celtic goal.

John Herron was proving to be Celtic’s main creative threat with the game getting edgier as the clock ticked down.

In the 72nd minute Paul George replaced Patrik Twardzik and almost immediately Celtic created a good chance but Johnstone delayed his pass to Kidd allowing a PSV defender to block the midfielders shot.

CELTIC: Thomson: Fisher, Fraser, Findlay, Chalmers: Herron, Kidd, Miller, Twardzik (George 72); Atajic (Kirwan 85), Johnstone

Disappointing result, but overall having lost 4 of the 6 games we can pinpoint the slow starts as being most costly. Sorry to see the bhoys finish bottom of the group, however Sporting Lisbon clearly took advantage of having qualified to put out a shadow squad / younger in their final game to lose 1-5 at Home to Villa having beaten them easily away…only 2 starters from previous game v Villa.

I’m sure much was learned from these games though, we find ourselves in good company with sides like Borussia Dortmund & Arsenal also 4th such is the standard.
