Aiden McGeady Celtic newsNeil Lennon has admitted that the sale of Aiden McGeady has been a win-win situation for player and club.

One of the first decisions that Lennon had to make when he was given the manager’s job on a permanent basis was to sell McGeady.

The midfielder had indicated that he would be interested in a move with Lennon needing funds to invest in a squad that had largely run it’s race.

McGeady was left out of the Celtic squad that lost 3-0 away to Braga at the start of the 2010/11 season but returned to play in the Emirates Cup against Lyon where Gary Hooper and James Forrest made a big impression as Lennon’s side started to take shape.

After two visits to Moscow McGeady joined Spartak in a £10m deal with neither party having any regrets about the deal.

“It would not be a case of him haunting us because we didn’t show Aiden the door,” Lennon explained ahead of his former team-mates return to Celtic in Spartak colours.

“He was a brilliant player for us and a great servant to Celtic but he wanted to go and the club felt it was the right time for him to go.

“We sold him to a good club where he has progressed. It was a win-win situation for everyone.

“But there is sometimes that quirk in football where your ex-player comes back and bites you.

“Aiden has a job to do and so do we. It would be a sore one whether Ari scored or Kombarov or Emenike. It would be no more sore because Aiden scored it.”
