Green revisits stadium moonbeam

Charles Green has relaunched a classic moonbeam with claims about a new expanded stadium to cope with the demands of the last 16 of the Champions League.

In times of trouble former Rangers owner Dave Murray used to feed his media friends tales of stadium development often featuring a retractable roof, hotel complex, super-casino, transport interchange (including high speed links to Glasgow Airport), conference centre and a bowling and cinema complex raising the capacity to 80,000 or more allowing Ibrox to stage world championship boxing bouts and host superstar concerts such as Wet Wet Wet.

While not giving away the same amount of details the new look Ibrox could become the second biggest stadium in Glasgow over-taking the capacity of southside giants Queens Park at Hampden.

Speaking in an exclusive interview staged by new communications chief Jim Traynor the Yorkshireman reveals: “I had this discussion with Ally, who knows this club significantly better than I do. He said if I could deliver consistently being in the Champions League and get into the last 16, then this stadium would not be big enough.

“If and when we get to that position, and I am confident we will, these are discussions the board will happily have.

“With the way the ground is configured, there is great opportunity to fill in the two corners and put another deck above the Argyle, which would substantially increase capacity.”

Green has been hosting a series of meetings about naming rights for the stadium but seems no closer to securing a deal to bring in further money.

Already this season he has discussed a likely kit deal with adidas, a commercial tie up with the Dallas Cowboys, bringing in three billionaire investors, having £30m in the bank and having a better balance sheet than Celtic.

Whether the new super stadium proposals go the same way as those other pledges remains to be seen.

The last time that Ibrox hosted a Champions League tie just 28,828 fans turned up to watch Daniel Larsson score the only goal of the game as Malmo beat Rangers 1-0.
