Galloway questions censorship on BBC Question Time

George Galloway has questioned the motives of the BBC after they edited out his comments on Rangers repaying tax.

The Respect MP recently made an early day motion calling on the newco to repay the tax trashed by oldco since Charles Green has claimed it is still the same club.

Galloway is an unlikely champion for HMRC but following the banking scandal and recent tax issues involving Amazon, Starbucks and others a closer focus is being paid to tax affairs.

Question Time is the BBC’s flagship news programme allowing an invited audience to grill politicians and public figures on a number of topical matters.

Using his twitter account the MP asked: “I called on Glasgow Rangers to pay the tax they owe to the country. Was that edited out of tonight’s show @bbcqt?”

Adding: “Nothing I have ever said @bbcqt has been edited out. EVER. Why was Rangers tax dodge censored? And by whom? #bbcqt”

Rather than deal with the issue at the time the state broadcaster will now have to explain to Galloway why his question wasn’t broadcast.

The former Glasgow MP has a reputation for tenaciously pursuing subjects and is unlikely to be bought off by a standard BBC response.

In his early day motion last month Galloway asked: “That this House notes that the owners of the club playing in the Scottish Third Division called Rangers claim that it is the same club with the same history as the liquidated club also known as Rangers; further notes that 14 million in VAT and PAYE was withheld in the run-up to administration by the previous Rangers; further notes that the club is now cash-rich through a share issue which raised in excess of 20 million; condemns the use of insolvency laws to avoid paying tax owed; and calls on the Government to take steps to reclaim the outstanding monies from Rangers and to bring forward legislative proposals to prevent clubs and companies sidestepping their liabilities through liquidation and then carrying on trading with effectively the same name and in exactly the same business.
