Twardzik and Herron book semi final place

Patrik Twardzik Celtic news

Celtic continued on the road to Hampden with a hard fought 2-0 win over Aberdeen booking a semi final place in the SFA Youth Cup.

Tony Watt made a surprise appearance in the team but it was goals from Patrik Twardzik and John Herron midway through the first half thatwon the tie.

After defeating Hearts and Hibs in Edinburgh in earlier rounds the young hoops have certainly deserved their place in the semi-final draw as they attempt to win the trophy for the fourth year running.

Leo Fasan produced a great instinctive near post save after 10 minutes with the visitors matching Celtic in every area- until the 24th minute.

Denny Johnstone fed the ball through to Lewis Kidd who squared the ball across the penalty box with Twardzik timing his run perfectly to drill a low shot into the net.

Five minutes later Celtic doubled their lead with a special effort from Herron. Taming a pass from Mikey Miller with his back to goal he turned and fired a great half volley into the net from 15 yards out.

After the excitement of the first half the second period was more of a midfield battleground with Celtic standing firm as Aberdeen attempted to get the goal that would open the tie up.

Paul George and  Jamie Lindsay replaced Denny Johnstone and Bahrudin Atajic but neither were able to impose themselves on the game.

Twardzik and Herron both had chances to add to the scoreline in the closing stages as Celtic deservedly booked their place in the semi final draw.

The only downside of the afternoon was a nasty looking injury to Marcus Fraser that saw the skipper replaced by Eoghan O’Connell with ten minutes left to play.

Kilmarnock and Dunfermline also booked their place in the semi final draw with the other semi finalist coming from Dundee United or St Mirren.

Well played to all concerned, certainly the most difficult route to any semi final that I can recall.

Some excellent prospects in this side and I hope that we will be seeing even more of them at first team level in the near future. Most definitely John Herron is more than capable of competing for a position.
