McMullan strike books bhoys final place

|

paul mcmullan newsCeltic defeated Queens Park 1-0 at Lesser Hampden today to book a place in the final of the Glasgow Cup.

Paul McMullan scored the only goal of the game in the 72nd minute as the visitors gained revenge for drawing with the spiders earlier in the competition at Lennoxtown.

Celtic only required a draw to progress to the final but were determined to do so in style attacking the home side from the first whistle. Despite needing a win to keep alive their chances of qualifying Queens posed little attacking threat although any throw-in was a threat with the Spiders No. 4 capable of launching the ball into the Celtic penalty box from almost any distance.

McMullan and Joe Thomson had half chances in the first period but Queens defended well with their ‘keeper sharp when called into action.

Eight minutes into the second half Luke Donnelly replaced Gareth McDonagh with the substitute shooting over from 15 yards a couple of minutes after coming onto the park.

McMullan was always the most likely scorer and duly settled the match in the 72nd minute. Taking a long pass in his stride the little striker showed great control coming in from the left channel before arching a right foot shot around the keeper into the top corner of the net.

Queens did attempt to force an equaliser but were unable to test Jordan Hart who made a welcome return from injury with a clean sheet.

Celtic will meet Sevco in the final of the Glasgow Cup with the venue and date still to be decided.

CELTIC: Hart: Eadie, Kellegher, Barrowmab, Waters: Thomson, Henderson, McManus, Nesbit: McMullan, McDonagh (Donnelly)
