Martin O’Neill has been sacked by Sunderland.
Earlier today the club failed to win for the eighth successive time going down to a 1-0 defeat from Manchester United at the Stadium of Light.
Oneill was in charge of Sunderland for just 16 months after taking over from Steve Bruce.
A club statement tonight read: “The club has parted company with manager Martin O’Neill.
“Sunderland AFC has announced that it has parted company with manager Martin O’Neill this evening.
The club would like to place on record its thanks to Martin and wishes him well for the future.
“An announcement will be made in the coming days regarding a successor.”
After today’s defeat O’Neill said: ““We were a little bit tentative in the first half and the own goal just about sums up the way things have been going.
“I think there was a little bit of tension and a lack of confidence. We gave Manchester United a bit too much time and space when they are the best team in the league.
“We tried to do something about it and we exerted a lot of pressure though without actually creating a clear-cut chances. The players were disappointed at half time but they galvanised and it was a terrific performance in the second half.”
At the start of the season O’Neill spent close to £25m to sign Steven Fletcher and Adam Johnston and was given £5m to sign Newcastle fan Danny Graham from Swansea.
Sunderland are just one point above third bottom placed Aston Villa and face Chelsea and Newcastle away in their next two fixtures.

Sorry to hear, sorry also that he left Celtic under the circumstances at the time. Hopefully he will find something in the near future.
I’m astounded how badly Sunderland have played this season, after MON joined them 16 months ago they showed the best form in his 1st 18-20 games and were top of the form league.
It looks like he has lost his magic touch & hopefully he will get employed somewhere soon?

Today looks like the end of the career of Martin O’Neill. So thanks for the memories Martin. 3 league titles, 3 Scottish Cups, 1 League Cup, 3 Champions League Campaigns. 1 Uefa Cup Final and a Scottish League Record 25 wins in a row from match 2 to match 26. The stuff of legend. Although among Celtic fans I’m still your biggest critic. You were a better manager when you didn’t have a lot of money and should have won more than you did. Made your reputation by beating big spending Dick Advocaat but ended up just like him by making teams bankrupt. Hope to see you on tv soon doing starjumps.

All I can say is thank God I”m not a Sunderland supporter .If they did sack him this late in the season, they are really looking for a negative re-action from the fans, if they are demoted.STUPID DECISION
This is karma! O’Neil walked out on every team he ever managed and would have done the same to Sunderland. They just pulled the trigger first. Back at Celtic? Are you kidding me? In his last season with us he should have been fired, not allowed to walk away! We had a five point lead with four games left yet he still managed to lose the league, and we didn’t even have to play that old club who used to be called rangers! We had already beaten them at their home ground.
We should have fired him, but at least Sunderland did, and I for one congratuate them.

Really? I think you need to look at facts with clear glasses, not the green tinted ones. O’Neil claimed he had to leave Celtic to look after Geraldine, yet shortly afterwards jumprd in at Villa! He had until yesterday quit every team he ever managed, and even had time to walk out on Leicester twice! You need to do your history!
No major surprise, I have no idea why he took the job in the first place – was never going to be challenging for anything. I’m sure he would have been fully aware of the situation and been planning ahead, seems he usually does.
Wouldn’t want him back at CP, not after he was working his ticket after 1 year to Leeds,
best of luck wherever he ends up..but I think his day of winning anything are over.
Sad to hear that would love to see him back at celtic in some capacity
