Dundee blast selfish St Mirren over reconstruction u-turn

|

St Mirren newsSelfish St Mirren are set to put the boot into plans to transform Scottish football.

Bringing the two league bodies into one, distributing commercial money throughout the game and creating a middle division with four top tier slots available have generally been welcomed throughout the game.

Neil Armageddon Doncaster believed that the plan was fully backed by SPL clubs but a week after rolling out the red carpet to Charles Green the Paisley club are ready to pull the plug on league reconstruction.

Saints chairman Stewart Gilmour is believed to be concerned about the impact on season ticket sales if his club fails to reach the top eight for the final part of the season.

There seems little difference in the quality of matches involved between finishing in eighth place with little prospect of winning a European place and finishing ninth to drop into the middle tier where seven other clubs will be fighting to finish in the top four to start the following season in the top division.

Clubs currently in the First Division would be the main beneficiaries of the changes receiving around £300,000 a year allowing them to retain full-time set ups.

Dundee know more than most about the difficulties facing survival for clubs in the First Division with chairman Scot Gardiner furious at the view taken by St Mirren

“We’re one of the clubs disappointed in the statement from St Mirren and we won’t be the only one,” Gardiner stated. “There have been elements of this we don’t agree with but to have a situation where you come up with a system which makes provision for 42 clubs — ranging from PLCs with a turnover of £100million, to clubs effectively run by committee, it’s nigh on impossible to do.

“It has been long hours, with hard work, to get to this current set-up that we have and I’m afraid it’s Utopian and just doesn’t relate to real life to think some clubs can just cherry-pick what they want from it.

“That’s particularly the case when those clubs didn’t bring up those things throughout the process — and I’m talking about St Mirren here.

“It’s easy to say we shouldn’t do this or we shouldn’t do that. We have a sick patient here with Scottish football.

“Are St Mirren acting selfishly? I think it is self-interest. I’m sorry, but I do.

“I respect Stewart’s position when he says that he’s voting for the sake of St Mirren because it’s better for them if things stay the way they are but my position is that it’s certainly not for the good of all of the Scottish game. Almost everyone else in the SPL agrees with me on that.”

  • KEIGHLEY BHOY says:

IS GILMOUR LOOKING OUT AND CONCERNED FOR HIS OWN CLUB OR THE NEW CLUB OWNED BY CHARLES GREEN, I BELIEVE THAT GILMOUR HAS A VESTED INTEREST IN SEVCO RANGERS GETTING INTO THE TOP FLIGHT ASAP, HAS HE HEAVILY INVESTED HIS OWN MONEY IN SEVCO RANGERS SHARES.

At least st.mirren are listning to their fans. The fans want bigger leagues playing each other twice. The SFA know this too, so whats the problem?

If reconstruction happens for 12-12-18 then i wont be renewing. Same boring pish!

    • Thomas says:

One cup and yer wagging the dog, why dont the fans run the SPL and instruct SKY on whats best for them!
By the way, hows yer fans buy out going?
Wonder if that was on CG agenda?
      Tumble Weed…….Sons of Sevco.

      • KevinBarry says:

What the fuck u talkin about?

Dunno if ur thinkin that because Sevco urny there that I’m bored? I got bored long ago but persevered. Even during the days of larsson and co, even the farce that was two seasons ago when we played the Huns 7 times in one season.
Wait, u think I’m a st. Mirren fan? Oh the embarrassment. My point is, st.mirren are listening to their fans as the said they don’t want 12-12-18. Celtic sent me a questionnaire about my thoughts and renewing next season. The FOLLOWING day it was agreed that the 12-12-18 would happen. What was the point in asking me my opinion then?

        • Thomas says:

Oh aye, I thought KevinBarry very St Mirrenish, not.
My point was they are no more listening to the fans than you are of influencing a SKY deal.

          • KevinBarry says:

It’s in the best interests of the SFA and it’s members to listen to the fans.

  • Col Newman says:

I won’t renew either, its a 16 team league and twice a season for me too.

I’m really conflicted on reconstruction. Something needs to be done, and, when it happens, we need to make sure that sevco aren’t allowed to slither up a division or two.

But I don’t like this new set up they’re trying to force through. I could, reluctantly, just about live with 12-12-18. However, the rest of it seems like a pile of overcomplicated crap.

And, let’s not forget, this system is a proven failure. It is crap.

I meant to say. It’s almost as if the powers at be are trying to manufacture the armageddon they promised us- just to prove how much we need the zombies.

      • KevinBarry says:

For years we’ve been told we the league couldn’t be made larger and 1 home and 1 away game against each team as the smaller clubs NEEDED to play Celtic and rangers 4 times. Well rangers are away so this is the perfect opportunity for a larger league to happen. I would get really excited about just one visit to tynecastle, pittodrie etc. I would kinda feel like this is our only chance to gub them in their own ground that season. I very rarely get excited about playing any games now because if they beat us then we can just wait to one of the potentially 5 other games to beat that team.

  • OZ CELT says:

All for some sort of re-jig regarding league set-up as long as it DOESN’T allow cheatco to move up any quicker than they could currently which BTW seems to me is the only reason its getting discussed at all

  • Jimbo102 says:

I would like to see a larger league and play each other twice, that’s it a simple wish from (some would say) a simple person.
This league reconstruction thing is by far the biggest red herring I’ve ever come across in Scottish football, and we have all fallen for it.
Has our football really got to the stage where fans are giving up their season tickets because of business decisions taken by suits???? I tought I supported my team through thick and thin for a million reasons but not because of what league we play in.
Mark my words, if as is seems likely we have the status quo next season, just ask yourself what the hell was this deflection for? Then glance over Govan way and all will be plainly evident.
Soon to be champions of Scotland again, hopefully a Scottish cup double, a terrific run in the CL, the next exciting phase of building our team, give up my season ticket NEVER hail hail

  • KevinBarry says:

The problem is we do support through thick and thin. No matter what decision is made the Celtic board believe there will be 40000+ season tickets sold. The bigger league thing must happen.

  • Bobo says:

Didn’t St Mirren have secret meetings with Craigy Whyte as well ?

    Sons of Sevconia indeed !
