St Mirren’s Stewart Gilmour is accused of agenda

|

St-MirrenAberdeen and Hearts have hit out at St Mirren after the Paisley side vetoed plans to restructure Scottish football.

St Mirren and Ross County voted against the proposals with most of the anger turned on Saints chairman Stewart Gilmour who left Hampden without commenting.

In January the SPL believed that they had unanimous backing for the wide reaching reforms but after inviting Charles Green to New St Mirren Park the Paisley side changed their mind and refused in elaborate on their reasons at today’s SPL meeting.

“You need to ask one club what their agenda is,” Milne said after the meeting broke up at Hampden. “That’s St Mirren.

“I’m very angry and I think today we have let down Scottish football. St Mirren Football Club have got to go and pose the question ‘why are they prepared to put the rest of Scottish football in jeopardy just because of their own selfish interests which they have been unable to explain in reasonable terms to people around the table today.”

At today’s meeting Celtic proposed that the 11-1 vote required for major restructuring was changed to a 9-3 majority but despite that concession Gilmour refused to discuss his reasons for rejecting the proposals.

“This is going to have major implications for Scottish football,” Milne added. “These are going to start flowing through in the short-term and I can see other implications in the medium-term and it is going to potentially seriously damage the game in the long-term.

“What was on the table for everyone to consider today was back the plan, an opportunity to move Scottish football forward. If it doesn’t deliver to the extent that 10 clubs genuinely believe it will deliver, then the opportunity is there to re-look at it down the line within two to three years.”

Hearts director David Souther said: “I wouldn’t like to talk about agendas but it was very clear today that despite what was said seven days ago about 11-1 being the reason to not see this through, the actual concession made during the meeting which changed the vote from 11-1 to 9-3 [under the new plan], when it got down to the bit that particular club stepped back from it.

“We were very close. The concession was a significant concession. All 11 clubs were led to believe the stumbling block was the 11-1 vote.

“The concession was to change the 11-1 to 9-3 so the stumbling block was removed. You now need to go and ask the club that believed that was the stumbling block and then change their mind.

“I do believe that the 11-1 vote was just used as a smokescreen to protect other people’s interests.”
