Former Celtic target is freed

|

Stephen HuntFormer Celtic transfer target Stephen Hunt has been freed by Wolves.

Neil Lennon enquired about Hunt’s availability during the January 2012 transfer window but was given to encouragement by the then Premiership club.

Wolves have been forced to slash their costs following relegation to League One with the Irishman an immediate casualty with a reported wage of £35,000 per week.

Former Wolves boss Mick McCarthy, who signed Hunt for Wolves from Reading for £3.5m in 2009, is interested in taking the midfielder to Ipswich Town but Hunt won’t be rushed into making a decision over his future.

Lennon is keen to add experience to his squad but has stated that his transfer priority would be to sign a striker with a physical presence.

Hunt will be 32 in August but with no transfer fee involved could fall within Celtic’s budget restrictions.

After missing six months of this season through injury he returned to the Wolves side in March and was one of the few players to emerge with credit as the club crashed into the third tier of English football.

Lennon has already gone public on his interest in Kevin Doyle who has a year remaining on his contract but is unlikely to be at Molineux at the start of the new season.

Back-to-back relegation’s have had a devastating effect on Wolves who have gone through three different managers since sacking McCarthy in February 2012.

Scotland defender Christophe Berra has also been released with the club having to pay back money to over 9,000 fans who bought season tickets based on the club retaining Championship status.

What kind of supporters take there money back from the club because they get relegated ? Ffs if that the kind of supporters wolves have who needs enemys. Shocking thing to do HH

    • nigel says:

The kind of supporters who’ve had to put up with poor performances and even poorer attitude from a bunch of over paid players for 2 years.

Shameful doesn’t even begin to describe it.

  • thaiscot says:

35k a week is way too much for a player in that division. Too much tv money in the game if a guy like that is earning 5 grand a day.

  • dublinbhoy says:

I wouldn’t touch him…too old and too used to the crazy wages paid by Wolves. From what I recall, he was less than complimentary about Celtic when linked with us after Reading were relegated a few years back. Let McCarthy have him. I’d take Kevin Doyle long before Hunt but he will have high wage expectations too.

    Hail Hail

  • Johnny Farrell says:

I wouldn’t touch either of them. Back to back relegations on 35k a week ? You’d expect a bit more from players for that kind of money. They are both closer to their true level in league 1..

He’s well past it! Shud have signed when you had the chance , knew u’d regret it just like sol campbell, David James, jay bothroyd and the rest …..HH

  • Michael says:

No chance. The ONLY player from the ROI squad who would get near the Celtic first team is McCarthy. I’d take Berra as a squad player though.

  • k bird says:

Good riddance and take Johnson and o hara with ya

  • danny crainie's double says:

    You’re welcome to Berra.
I’ve seen some donkeys play at centre-half for Wolves over the years and he is up there with the worst of them.

  • HoopNo7 says:

big gamble for the kinda money he’d expect but if he truly has found his level in the 3rd tier of english football then he wouldnt be out of place in the SPL based on what ive seen this season! I hope Lenny is looking to add quality youth to an already talented bunch of individuals with a view replacing those who will no doubt alight in the summer! HH!

    • Mildou Wolf says:

Are you seriously comparing the 3rd tier of English football with the SPL ? Celtic have been beaten and had to fight hard to win games in the SPL and I’m absolutely convinced Celtic would be in the top half of the EPL, the SPL might not be as good as the EPL but to compare to the 3rd tier of English football is ridiculous, I’m not sure what you’ve actually seen this year maybe a few games on tv and you probably live in England ! We already have enough English numptys knocking the Scottish game without fellow Celtic fans doing the same !

  • bttsfootballtips says:

I don’t know about yous guys but the games I’ve watched this season in the championship in England have been really poor id rather watch SPL with the young players thats coming through and obviously watching the champions HH

  • scotwolf says:

I was down at The Molineux several times last season and believe me the Celtic reserve team would have wiped the floor with them. A lot of misguided English fans refer to the SPL as The Mickey Mouse League, Fizzy Pop Football etc. But with what I have seen of English League 1 stuff, they would be made to eat their words.
