Trapattoni tips former Celt to be top boss

Giovanni Trapattoni believes that Paolo di Canio can go to the top in management.

The two men worked- and clashed- at Juventus in the early nineties with the young hothead now trying to install discipline on his Sunderland squad.

Di Canio has rarely been out of the headlines since he moved into management with his fascist views highlighted as soon as he joined Sunderland.

After steering the club clear of relegation he fell foul of the PFA after dishing out a series of fines and slamming the lifestyle of players like Scotland star Phil Bardsley.

All eyes will be on di Canio when the new season starts in August with the Ireland boss believing that the Sunderland boss can succeed at the top level.

” He can be a good manager because he will have learned how to deal with players,” Trapattoni explained.

“When he went to England to play it gave him more experience. He matured there and he grew. He was a fantastic, creative player.

“He was a little bit strange, as I discovered when I was his manager, however it was a different situation for him and he changed there, for sure.

“He was abrasive and confrontational as a player but that is his character. He can be a good manager, I am sure.”

Di Canio has been linked with the managers job at Serie B side Bari but despite the headlines and troubles is certain to start the new season in charge of Sundeland.
